Listening to the Wind

Yesterday I was in a yucky mood. First day of cycle and all that. The kids were getting wild, and I sent them outside. J asked if he could take R to the forest pathway at the end of the street. I knew the younger kids would want to go along too (and he's not quite ready to watch all of them). So I went with them.

And boy, did I need it. Way more than they did. {{Deep Breath}}
We walked slowly as the path disappeared. We looked at flowers and bugs. As we got further in, I told the boys (the littles - the biggers had long ago abandoned us) to be quiet and listen.

It took a few tries, but we finally did it. The wind started behind us up the hill, whooshed past where we were sitting, then continued to roll down the hill. We could see the leaves quaking and branches swaying.

After awhile we could hear birds and bugs, and possibly lizards crawling through the undergrowth. We watched ants and spiders and butterflies and beetles.

We collected sticks and looked at their shapes and examined fallen bark and pine needles. A decided we needed to build a nest for the birds, so we put the sticks down in a circle, and put a pine cone inside. On the way back we touched flower petals, leaves and grasses.

I needed that.

  1. Good job, Rachel! Stop and smell the flowers, and all that!
    You're getting there, really!
    You're about a year into your posting, reread your the blogposts from when you arrived in France and see how they make you feel.

  2. Dear Rachel, you don't know me, but I have been reading your blog ever since you moved to Paris. I do read your mom's blogs as well and that's how I came across yours. I am part of the large TA-world and I met your parents at a TA-conference in Istanbul, summer 2006.
    When I was 18 I went from a small town in The Netherlands to a somewhat bigger town in Iowa for over a year. Although I was much younger then than you are now, I do remember the spells of homesickness and the longing for "let everything please turn back to normal". I sincerely wish you brighter and easier times to come in Europe!
    To level out a bit (I know quite a lot about you, you know nothing about me): I am a 54 year old woman, married, one son (20, just moving out), living in The Hague (Netherlands), owner of a small scaled business in consultancy and counselling.
    Kind regards,
    Jacqueline van Gent

  3. Nice to meet you Jacqueline! My mom & I used to cross over a lot more when I was working too. Welcome.

    Also, "Hi Sally!" I will follow your advice to review where I was nine months ago. (Hmmm... like a baby - a lot can change).
